How to Install the Software

Installation Overview

Installing the converter on your computer is quick and easy.

In summary:

  1. Download the program files to your computer
  2. Rename the files
  3. Start Excel and install the program

This is a one-time procedure (but may be repeated should ever wish to re-install it).

Please continue reading below for detailed, step-by-step instructions.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1 - Download the Converter to Your Computer

After your order is received, I will prepare your converter and email the files to you. You will receive the program file and sample configuration files:

StatementConverter.xla (the main program)

SC_config_System.txt (optional conversion settings)

SC_config_BankAccount_sample.txt (sample conversion settings for converting bank account statements)

SC_config_CreditCard_sample.txt (sample conversion settings for converting credit card statements)

Save the files to your computer

In our examples, we save all of the files to the folder My Credit Card Statements, however here are some tips:

Saving the .txt conversion settings files:

  • Version 3.1 and later: You do NOT have to save the .txt conversion settings files to your computer — the program will create them automatically when you convert your first statement.
  • Version 3.0 and earlier: Save the .txt files to the same folder as your credit card or bank statements to be converted. This is REQUIRED.

Saving the .xla program file:

  • FOR EXCEL 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016: it is recommended to save the .XLA program file in Excel’s default folder for add-ins, for example:
    Excel 2016: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Root\Office16\Library
    Excel 2013: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\Library
    Excel 2010: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\Library
    Excel 2007: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Library
(For earlier versions of Excel, you may save the .xla with the configuration files).

Other tips:

  • for Mac: Excel macros cannot handle long folder names, so use a folder name of 25 characters or less. For example, instead of "QuickBooks Statement Converter Program" use "QB Stmt Converter".
  • Make note of the folder name to where you save the files.

Step 2 - Rename the Configuration Files

Version 3.1 and later: You may SKIP this step 2 — the program now automatically creates the configuration setting files when you convert your statement.

Version 3.0 and earlier:

You will receive sample configuration files with the program and they include "_sample" in the filename. You may use them as is but it's recommended that you remove the "_sample" (so that if you upgrade or reinstall, the distribution files do not overwrite your existing files).

Step 3 - Add the Converter to Excel

  • Start Microsoft Excel
  • For the next step, Excel requires a workbook (any Excel spreadsheet) to be open.

If your Excel does not automatically start with a workbook open, open any of your existing spreadsheets (or create a new one by selecting FILE > NEW... > Blank workbook). This open workbook is not used other than to enable the Excel menu in the next step.
